Conversations with Geisha: A Relaxed and Enjoyable Experience in Kagurazaka, Tokyo
In Kagurazaka, Tokyo, there are four geisha-run bars where you can invite geisha, enjoy drinks, and have conversations with them. While experiencing geisha performances—such as dance, singing, and shamisen—at a formal ryotei (traditional Japanese restaurant) with geisha wearing serious expressions is a wonderful experience, I highly recommend talking to geisha at a relaxed geisha bar. The reason is simple: conversations with geisha are incredibly enjoyable.
Geisha’s Main Role: Mastering the Arts and Engaging Conversations at Ryotei
Geisha’s main job is to perform arts in Ryotei banquet rooms (ozashiki). For this, they undergo rigorous training for many years. At the same time, part of their role is to entertain guests by playing games and creating fun, engaging experiences. Since geisha often engage in conversation with various guests at Ryotei, excellent conversational skills are essential.
Conversations with Geisha: Unveiling Private Stories and Playful Moments at Bars
Geisha use these conversational skills to entertain guests at bars. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that conversations with geisha in a bar setting are so enjoyable. Moreover, after finishing their performances at an ozashiki and shaking off the tension, geisha may share private stories or personal worries that you wouldn’t hear elsewhere. Some geisha become more talkative with drinks, while others are quiet and prefer listening. There are also playful geisha who are great at making people laugh.
The Geisha of Kagurazaka: Meet the 17 Geisha, Including Newly Debuted Hangyoku
Currently, there are 17 geisha in the Kagurazaka district (two of whom are Hangyoku, apprentice geisha) registered with the Tokyo Kagurazaka Kumiai (Association). One of the Hangyoku just made her debut (first ozashiki appearance) on September 3rd. By the way, in Tokyo, Hangyoku refers to apprentice geisha, also known as Oshaku. In Kyoto, they are called Maiko. In Tokyo, only Hangyoku wear the traditional white makeup on their faces.
Enjoy Insights from Young and Veteran Geisha
The ages of Kagurazaka’s geisha range from their twenties to their seventies. There are five geisha in their twenties, giving the Kagurazaka district a relatively younger average age compared to the other six traditional geisha districts in Tokyo. Conversations with younger geisha in their twenties are, of course, very enjoyable. Meanwhile, conversations with veteran geisha, who know the ins and outs of the entertainment world, can provide fascinating behind-the-scenes stories and valuable insights, making for an equally delightful experience.
For foreign tourists particularly interested in geisha and the geisha district (Karyukai), the opportunity to ask as many questions as they want at a geisha bar is invaluable. Every person I’ve taken to these bars, regardless of gender, has been extremely satisfied with the experience.
Experience Kagurazaka's Geisha Bar: Enjoy with an Interpreter and Affordable Pricing
While there are some geisha who speak English, the majority are not fluent. However, by bringing one of our English-speaking interpreter guides along to the geisha bar, you can fully enjoy the experience without any language barriers.
Why not enjoy such a rare and unique experience at a geisha bar in Kagurazaka, Shinjuku? For up to five participants, the cost is ¥30,000 for one hour (¥6,000 per person), making it an affordable option compared to experiences at ryotei, which can cost around ¥50,000 per person. I guarantee this will become one of the most memorable parts of your trip to Japan. Please consider visiting a geisha bar.
