Did You Know About the Unique Geisha Costume Event 'Setsubun Obake'?
Have you ever heard of a Japanese tradition where geisha dress up in costumes, similar to Halloween? That’s 'Setsubun Obake'—a unique geisha costume event also known as the Setsubun Ghost Festival!

This year, the event was held on February 3 at the traditional ryotei (Japanese restaurant) "Yukimoto" in Kagurazaka, Tokyo. For one exceptional night, geisha, who usually appear in elegant kimono, transformed into a variety of unique characters, from Western-style outfits to famous figures. This rare spectacle is something you can only see at Setsubun Obake.

Unexpected and Hilarious Costumes!
“Wait, is that Dekopin, Shohei Ohtani’s dog from the LA Dodgers!?” “It feels like I’ve time-traveled to the Heian period!”
This year, the event featured geisha dressed as Shohei Ohtani’s dog, Dekopin, and his wife, former professional basketball player Mamiko Tanaka, along with a stunning re-creation of Heian-era (794-1185) aristocrats in an elegant court dance, and even some in character-inspired costumes!

A complete contrast to the usual refined world of geisha, this playful, vibrant celebration kept the audience entertained throughout the night. It was full of laughter, surprises, and excitement beyond expectations!

More Than Just Costumes—Mesmerizing Shishimai and Acrobatics!
To make the night even more special, the event also included a spectacular lion dance (Shishimai) and breathtaking acrobatics performed by the Daikagura Kyokugei Association. Not only the geisha but also top-class traditional entertainers showcased their extraordinary skills, leaving the audience in awe.
Many people were saying, "I never knew such an amazing event existed!"

A Night Unique to Kagurazaka
Gathering over 10 geisha in one place to perform and interact with guests is an incredibly rare occasion. On this special night, Yukimoto transformed into a dreamlike space filled with joy, elegance, and unforgettable moments.

What Is "Setsubun Obake"?
The tradition of Setsubun Obake is based on an old belief: “By disguising oneself as a different age or gender, one can avoid being targeted by demons roaming on the night of Setsubun.”
Although its exact origins are unclear, it is said to have been widely practiced since the late Edo period, especially in Kyoto.
