A Mysterious Setsubun Night: 'Setsubun Obake' (Spirits in Disguise) in Tokyo's Kagurazaka

Did you know that Japan has a Setsubun tradition similar to Halloween?

In Kagurazaka, Tokyo, geisha dress in costumes, unlike their usual elegant kimono for a unique annual event called "Setsubun Obake (Spirits in Disguise)."

Imagine geisha in glamorous Western-style dresses, men’s attire, or humorous disguises—on this special night, Kagurazaka’s traditional hanamachi (geisha district) transforms into a different world.

In 2025, Setsubun Obake will be held from February 3rd (Monday) to February 5th (Wednesday). Additionally, on February 3rd (Monday), a special Setsubun event will take place. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience a one-of-a-kind cultural tradition!

What is Setsubun Obake? – A Disguise to Ward Off Evil Spirits

On the night of Setsubun, it was believed that demons roamed freely. To avoid being recognized and affected by misfortune, people disguised themselves in a way that completely differed from their usual appearance. This ancient belief led to the tradition of Setsubun Obake.

Setsubun Obake was a popular custom, especially in Kyoto during the late Edo period. However, it gradually declined over time. In recent years, it has been revived as a seasonal performance in Kyoto’s geisha districts.

Following this tradition, geisha in Kagurazaka also dress in unique costumes and appear at Ryotei's Ozashiki (tatami parlor gatherings).
