The Biggest Geisha Event, the "39th Kagurazaka Odori," is Coming Soon!
There are only 10 days left until the biggest geisha event, "39th Kagurazaka Odori," which will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024. All seats are reserved, and only a few tickets remain. This is a rare opportunity to see all the geisha of Kagurazaka together. Don't miss this once-a-year event where Kagurazaka's geisha showcase their skills for the public!
The "Kagurazaka Odori" is one of the most important events for Kagurazaka geisha, as it is their annual performance for the public. In 2011, it was designated as a Shinjuku Ward Intangible Cultural Property.
Unique Performances and Special Photo Ops at the 39th Kagurazaka Odori
The performance will feature Nagauta (traditional Japanese music), Kiyomoto, and Tokiwazu styles, along with songs and dances inspired by Kagurazaka, written by Kyoka Izumi (1873–1939), a famous author with strong ties to the area. The grand finale will feature all the geisha performing together and distributing "Tenugui towels" to the audience—a tradition at the event.
One of the unique highlights of the "Kagurazaka Odori" is that even Jikata (geisha who typically play instruments, such as the shamisen) will perform dances as Tachikata during this event. This is a rare opportunity, occurring only once a year. Additionally, during the intermission, there will be a rare opportunity to take commemorative photos with some of the geisha, making this event even more special.
Please note that next year’s "Kagurazaka Odori" will not be held due to preparations for the 40th-anniversary celebration. So, if you miss this 39th edition, there won’t be another chance to see the Kagurazaka geisha perform publicly for some time.
Our customers, a family of five from the U.S., are planning to attend the "Kagurazaka Odori" after participating in our Kagurazaka Walking Tour. As you can see, we recommend combining the "Kagurazaka Odori" performance with other experiences in Kagurazaka. Please consider this opportunity.
