Since our company began offering traditional cultural experience tours, I have had the opportunity to converse with many artisans and geisha. Among the craftsmen I've spoken to are Ukiyo-e artisans, Dyeing artisans, Kumihimo braiders, Tofu craftsmen, and more. Additionally, I’ve had many conversations with Noh performers, Iaido masters, Monks, and others.
I always feel that these conversations with artisans and geisha are very pleasant. They are all "genuine (sincere) people." Perhaps it’s because they are pursuing something they truly love. I would love for many travelers to have conversations with artisans and geisha.
Why Are Artisans and Geisha Genuine People?
Talking to artisans and geisha feels so good for several reasons: ① Passion and sincerity, ② Expertise and skills, ③ Self-realization and satisfaction, ④ Humanity and warmth, ⑤ Unique perspectives and values. Let's delve into each point briefly.
① Passion and Sincerity
Craftsmen approach their work with great passion. Their sincere attitude and honesty toward their work are evident in their interactions with others. This passion and sincerity are easily communicated to the listener, often evoking empathy and inspiration.
② Expertise and Skills
Through years of experience and effort, artisans acquire specialized knowledge and advanced skills. When they talk about this knowledge and these skills, they can provide specific and deep insights, making the conversation extremely interesting for the listener.
③ Self-Realization and Satisfaction
Many artisans achieve self-realization through their work, and this satisfaction is reflected in their speech and demeanor. Conversations with people who are pursuing and achieving what they love can have a positive impact on the listener.
④ Humanity and Warmth
Many artisans value their interactions with people and have a kind and warm attitude. They love talking about their works and techniques, and they have a strong desire to share that joy with others. This human warmth makes the conversation even more pleasant.
⑤ Unique Perspectives and Values
Artisans have unique perspectives and values about their specialized fields. Their stories often include detailed attention to aspects that general people might overlook, as well as profound philosophies. These stories provide the listener with new viewpoints and intellectual stimulation.
Conversations with such "genuine (sincere) people" as artisans and geisha can be a kind of refreshing tonic, creating precious memories for you. Recalling those beautiful memories might make you want to talk to artisans and geisha again and inspire you to visit Japan once more. I hope many travelers will have the opportunity to converse with craftsmen and geisha.
