Geisha at Eel Restaurant
Authentic Geisha Experience in Tokyo, Not Just Kyoto
Tokyo's six geisha districts, known as the 'Tokyo Rokkagai,' include Kagurazaka, Shimbashi, Akasaka, Yoshicho, Asakusa, and Mukojima.
The Kagurazaka district, established in the late Edo period, dates back to 1788. It is renowned as the only geisha district that was spared during the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923. Along with Akasaka, Kagurazaka remains a favorite haunt for politicians and business magnates, who often visit incognito to this day.
The Art of Kagurazaka Geisha
Geisha at Eel Restaurant
"Shimakin," founded in 1869 (Meiji 2), is the oldest restaurant in Kagurazaka. Originally, it was a beef hotpot restaurant, which was rare in Japan at the time. It is also mentioned in the literary work The Seven Wonders of Kagurazaka by the renowned author Kafu Nagai.
Located near the main Sotobori Street at Kagurazaka-Shita, Shimakin is a well-known establishment among many visitors to Kagurazaka. Of course, it enjoys an excellent reputation for its delicious eel dishes and, according to the major review site Tabelog, it is ranked fifth among eel restaurants in Shinjuku Ward.
At Shimakin, Geisha banquets can accommodate between 2 and 40 guests, offering great flexibility for couples and small groups, which enhances convenience for travelers. Additionally, with a large hall that can accommodate up to 40 people, it is also ideal for group events.
Geisha banquets at Shimakin can be held from 11 AM to 9 PM, making it an excellent option for overseas travelers who wish to enjoy a Geisha banquet during lunchtime.
This tour is private, and children are welcome to participate.
Shimakin welcomes children, and the Kagurazaka Geisha are skilled at entertaining foreign children with games and activities. Some foreign children are so touched by the experience that they send letters to the Geisha after returning home. Age is no barrier to enjoying a Geisha banquet.
This kind of family experience will become a highlight of your trip to Japan and a cherished lifelong memory.
Peace of mind with an English-speaking guide
An English-proficient interpreter guide is included, ensuring that foreign guests who do not speak Japanese can fully enjoy the experience.
With the help of the English-speaking guide, you can have in-depth conversations with the geisha.
